Hi everyone! My name is Megs, and I am very excited to the virtual spokesperson this 6FIT. The picture to the right is the perfect representation of my real life. It is crazy and chaotic, so I am hoping to give some inspiration to everyone out there who feels like they do not have the time or energy to have a healthy lifestyle. This is my fifth 6Fit, and every time I get better about incorporating healthy eating and working out not only in my daily life, but my family’s life as well.
Why has 6FIT been so life changing for me? I guess some history of my past eating and exercise habits would be helpful. I have always been good about working out. In high school, I was active in sports and remember working out to my mom’s Jane Fonda’s step aerobics VCR tapes. (I just dated myself) College was a time of poor eating (think Papa Johns breadsticks ordered routinely after midnight while studying for my nursing finals), but I always made time for a run or a session on the StairMaster. A question has just popped in my mind- do those even exist in gyms today?
After college, I went off to grad school and my eating habits continued. While on my evening shifts as a nurse, it was not uncommon for me to drink two large Diet Cokes from the fountain machine. I rarely sat still long enough to eat meals when I worked, and when I was at home studying dinners consisted of a bagel, soup or a Chipotle burrito. Remember the days when a whole wheat bagel with nonfat cream cheese and a Diet Coke was eating healthy? That was my go to meal, and I remember my twenty two year old self thinking all the time how tired I was. What would I tell my twenty two year old self now? Just wait until you have kids.
I married my college sweetheart after grad school, and fast forward 9 years and we now have four kids. We are a military family, and the Navy has kept us busy with moves and deployments. During the years since grad school, my eating habits have improved, but to be honest up until 2 years ago before my first 6FIT, vegetables remained an afterthought. Working out was always a constant for me, but I frequently skipped meals and made poor snack choices. Frozen dinners were a staple because they were quick and easy with little ones and a husband who was frequently gone. My Diet Coke habit had been switched to a Starbucks obsession, which I will say has not exactly been fixed, but it is something I am working on (that is a whole separate blog post). Baby steps right?
Life is busy for us all, but thanks to 6FIT I have realized that eating healthy and exercising regularly are goals we can all obtain. The main purpose of 6FIT is to “eat less processed foods and more real foods”. This was hard for me because up until this point cheese and crackers were my favorite snack food. The goal is to eat six servings of fruits and veggies each day and drink at least 64 ounces of water. Did you know a red pepper plain is actually delicious? That adding fruit to water is a great way to actually get you to want to drink it? That making your own kale chips is easy? My husband and kids eat brussel sprouts? Don’t believe it- well here is the proof in pictures from our dinner last night…
they just absolutely...
Or I should say- my husband now loves them.
They told me last night after dinner that I am the best mom ever! (but could we please not have these again, and then proceeded to ask when was the next pizza night). Although I have not gotten them to love brussel sprouts or any leafy greens for that matter, they have been more in love with other foods we have introduced- salmon, homemade pesto and even quinoa pasta.
The next six weeks is always a journey for me, and each time I discover something new about myself. Cheers to another adventure!
