In my 8th grade yearbook I wrote that in 20 years I would live in New York and own a dance studio. Living in California this dream seemed far off, but I made it happen....Boston is close enough to New York, right?!
I love working and had jobs since I was 16 year old. After graduating from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts Double Major in Art History & Studio Art, I moved to Boston. A few of my post college jobs consisted of being a full time nanny, administrative assistant for admissions at Berkelee College of Music & an HR assistant with the Commonwealth. In addition to these jobs, I also had the experience of temping all over the city during the day; I was not a fan. At night however, I kept my teaching schedule very full and loved it! I taught early morning classes, nights and every Saturday & Sunday. I dreamed of the day I could do it full time, but I knew that knowing how to teach was only half the battle. I enrolled in a small business class with Brookline Adult Education. Having never taken a business class in my life, I thought this was the perfect start. Not only was I guided through my business plan, but my professor encouraged me to start right away with zero financial risk. I took his advice 10 years ago, and voila, danceFIT was born.
As all small business owners can tell you, it is not at all as glamorous as it seems. We work AROUND THE CLOCK, and one thing I certainly struggle with is that we never stop thinking about work. At times I feel like I think about work more when I am not actually at work opposed to when I am teaching and on the mat. We can't clock out at the end of the day, and I certainly have sent all of you an email or two at 11pm from bed. Today, in the dance & fitness industry there is literally a studio on every corner now (yes, I can actually see another studio from my own studio), which means it is imperative to be creative and to set danceFIT apart. The exercises may be similar across studios, but the experience and personal attention is what I feel separates us. I literally think about danceFIT all day long (I am working on compartmentalizing my day:), and how I can improve that experience for every adult and child who trust us to provide them with a great experience.
My stream of conscious right now... "I need to make a playlist. I want to add a new ab sequence. I have to schedule a constant contact for Monday. Should I send it Sunday night or Monday morning? I should schedule two emails. DanceFIT Natick's 2nd birthday is coming up. Where'd the time go. I should create some cute graphics for Instagram & facebook. I need to plan the swap till you drop appetizers. I will set up a time to meet with my friend, Erin...the party planner queen. I need to remind clients that they have several more hours to shop for wholesale prices in the online store. I should read through all the Cyber Monday emails that are already coming in so I don't have to head to Target the week before Christmas. The December schedule is finalized now, and I have to announce it. I should email all the new parents who are enrolled for January and welcome them to danceFIT. Can't wait to meet them! I am so excited about our January fitness challenge....when should I reveal that? Should I do facebook ads. I hate facebook ads, they cost so much money. I am teaching at Wayland Community Nursery School on Tuesday & Friday this week, I need to get all my marketing materials together... Ok, onto life stuff....I need to fold the laundry in the bedroom...it is getting embarrassing now. Sunday is food prep day...ugh, I don't want to go to the grocery store with the kids in the morning. I really need to get to bed early tonight.....the baby is going to be up at 3 AM. You know what I need (like all moms)....an intern, YES, I really need an intern. That is going to be my priority tomorrow...contact all colleges and send them my internship position. It feels like Sunday."
I really mean this when I say, DanceFIT clients are the best. They are kind, thoughtful, caring, supportive & make our studio the special place it is. I think it really hit home on Thanksgiving when my family and I were driving to VT and clients began tagging us on FB. It was Thanksgiving and they were taking the time to thank me & each other for their morning workouts.
Thank you for supporting my small business, my home away from home....my dream!
