Beyond The Barre
tales from a dance studio owner

Here Comes the Real World!

3/3/2015

This was the last week of 6Fit and time to get ready for the “real world”. From here on out, the motivation is up to me to continue the healthy eating and workout schedule I’ve been following for the past 5 weeks. No more food and fitness challenges, no more points to earn, all the decisions are left up to me.

For this last week, it was up to us to create our own food goal for the week. I decided to go back to the week where we cut out bread and pasta. I love bread and pasta a lot, so I wanted another week of trying foods with better alternatives. I wanted to finish 6Fit strong, so I also added in no alcohol and no sweets… cheating not allowed!

Well, Day 1 sure knew how to test me. After our 6Fit seminar that night, Team Kale headed over to Kayte’s place to watch The Bachelor. What was on the menu? Wine and cheese and crackers. Here comes the FOMOF again. I thought about this for a minute. Were my goals really attainable? This week is supposed to be all about setting realistic goals for yourself that you can carry forward into the “real world” after 6Fit ends. Restricting myself completely from my top 3 food loves was just not realistic and I was setting myself up to fail.

That’s when Miss Ashley and I started talking about the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 principle focuses on clean, healthy eating 80% of time and allowing yourself to indulge 20% of the time. It’s perfect for someone like me who will never be able to completely cut out certain foods from their diet.  Never having bread or never having sweets will just make me miserable and I won’t be motivated to keep eating well. But allowing myself to indulge for 3 meals/ week? That is definitely doable and would give me something to look forward to.

So I had that glass of wine at Kayte’s. And on Wednesday after a really long day, I had some Ben & Jerry’s. And on Saturday, my husband planned a wonderful date night out at Tomasso where they make amazing homemade pasta. But the rest on the week, I ate really well, cooking healthy meals at home with lots of fruits and veggies for snacks.

As I sit here on Sunday, this last day of 6 Fit, I realize this has by far been the best week for me. I got to have wine. I got to have sweets. I didn’t have FOMOF and truly enjoyed my date night. Yet I feel better about myself this week than I have after any other week of 6Fit. Even though 6Fit might be over, I’m so excited to take everything I’ve learned over the past few weeks and keep it going forward to reach my ultimate goal of getting into the best shape of my life this year!
