Beyond The Barre
tales from a dance studio owner

Something is better than nothing

"Something is better than nothing" seems to be my new 6FIT mantra. When it comes to fitness, I tend to be an all or nothing kind of person. I knew 6FIT was just what I needed post-baby because it would push me to start working out again after a long hiatus. I was really excited to jump all in. I signed up for all of my classes in advance using the tip to treat your classes like meetings, so you are less likely to break the commitment. I planned to work out at least 6 days a week.

I tried to plan ahead and bought some gear to help make life easier with a new baby. I bought some at home gear, so I could take advantage of virtual classes on days I can't make it to the studio. Despite my grand plans, I'm just not able to work out as often as I would like. Even the times I do get to work out, I sometimes I have to cut it short.

There have been times I've gotten texts from my husband saying "angry baby" and I've had to rush out of a zumba class half way through, to get home and help soothe my daughter or times when she just won't go to bed and I have to start a virtual class 1/3 of the way through.

The same goes with food prep. The month after my daughter was born, I ate only what was convenient which means I wasn't always making the best choices. I swore when 6FIT started, I would start doing my weekly meal prep and everything would be good again. In the past, I loved meal prep. I would set aside a few hours on a Sunday and prep meals or at least prep the ingredients for the meals I'd make later in the week. Meal prep is looking different these days. When I meal prep now, it's usually chop red pepper, daughter wakes up, spend time with her, move on to chop onion, spend time with her, prep more, repeat....

In the past, this is where I probably would have gone from all to nothing mode, but 6FIT is holding me accountable. I don't want to let my team down or my self down. I may not be a high point earner or doing as much as I'd like, but I'm finding a better balance that may be more attainable post-6FIT.

The biggest lesson I've learned so far from this 6FIT is  that sometimes you just have to do the best that you can.  I may not get to work out as often as I'd like, but half a workout is better than no workout. I may not get to meal prep the way I'd like, but any meal prep is better than no meal prep. I may not eat the best 100% of the time, but maybe getting closer to the 80-20 rule is a better goal. Something is better than nothing.
